Hunting and Fishing
Bordered by braided rivers, backcountry lakes, the Pacific Ocean, and the foothills of the Southern Alps, this is a paradise for recreational hunters and anglers. Sea-run salmon in the Rakaia River between November and March are caught on heavy spinning tackle upriver or on long distance casting tackle in the surf at the river mouth. You’ll bag an average size of around 8kg! Easily accessible, the Ashburton and Rangitata Rivers are also popular with anglers with trophy fish being regularly reported.

For trout enthusiasts, the high country lakes of Heron, Roundabout, Emma, Camp and Clearwater host large populations of brown and rainbow trout. Lake Emily is a habitat for American Brook Trout. You’ll find some of the best wilderness angling waters in the country. Fishing in wilderness streams meandering through tussocklands and beech forest against a backdrop of the Southern Alps is a special experience.

Numerous professional guides are available to maximise opportunities for those on a short time frame or wishing to increase their own knowledge and skill levels.
